From Karla Mickelson:
Night Dancer is one in a series of Night Dancers. A similar piece at the Plains Art Museum states, "... Depicting an anthropomorphic (human-like) figure dancing. Night Dancer is from a series of sculptures entitled Night Dancer. According to the artist, 'The series was inspired by an experience I had looking out the window of my home. A vulture appeared, soaring above the property in a very beautiful and lyrical manner, catching the air currents ... a dichotomy occurred to me. There was an interesting tension created between the beauty of form and movement, and the sense of foreboding that we associate with a vulture. I attempted to capture this dichotomy in the work.' "

The wood is grape vine trunk from my cousin's vineyard in Fresno, California. We made a trip out to visit my cousin Sandra and her husband, Jon Marthedal. On arrival at their home Jon was in the process of cleaning out old and dead wood from the vineyard. There was a large pile that he was going to get rid of and Duane was mortified by the thought. He combed through the piles and pulled out several pieces that we shipped back home. The grape vine trunk appears in the Night Dancer series as well as in other sculptures. We have been to my cousin's home twice over the years and picked out grape vine trunks to bring home for future sculpture projects.

Duane loved the gnarly gestural quality of the grape vine trunks. If there were soft or rotting areas, to harden the wood, he would soak the pieces in linseed oil.

From Karla Mickelson:
The Scent Catcher is one in a series of large woodland creatures. Duane always loved the setting of our home nestled in the woods on the shore of Lake 11. He enjoyed nature and would delight in seeing footprints in the soil or snow. Often, the prints were the only remaining 'remnants of the night." So one would wonder, what kind of creature was attached to those prints? As the creature wandered the woods, he tried to imagine what they looked like and what they would be doing. Lifting its head, the Scent Catcher has just caught a whiff of something on the edge of a breeze. There is both caution and curiosity as the creature tries to discern the scent.

Most of the wood was found on our property or on the old family wood lot near our home now owned by his brother, Dwight. There are a variety of wood pieces that make up the body and legs augmented by the steel armature. The head is one natural piece of found wood. </text>

“This image of Martin Luther was created in the intaglio print medium and considers the figurative and formal elements of a portrait of Luther as Junker Jörg in 1521. This is my visual interpretation of Luther while he was in hiding at the Wartburg Castle. I worked a beard into this image and gave his renaissance hat subtle jester-like features to add to the idea of his disguise.” Diego Lasansky
The print is given in celebration of the 500th year anniversary of the Reformation.

Lasansky, Diego. Diego Lasansky: Paintings, Drawings, Prints. Cedar Rapids: Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, 2015. Print.
"Diego Lasansky, grandson of famed printmaker Mauricio Lasansky, is a painter and printmaker in his own right. While still a student at the University of Iowa (BFA 2016), his work has already garnered local, national, and international attention. Prior to his formal college education, Diego Lasansky learned about artistic processes not only from his grandfather, but also from his uncles, three of whom are professional artists. Growing up within this exceptional artistic milieu allowed the young Diego to learn the masterful techniques he employs. Lasansky’s work is figurative, and, like his grandfather, tends to focus on subjects readily available to him—such as family members—and those of historical and personal significance, such as Goya, Rembrandt, and Martin Luther. Early success came to Diego Lasansky in his series Portrait at Eighteen, a set of 50 intaglio self-portraits, each with distinct differences from the rest in the series."
