There was a reception Sunday, April 9th, 2017 at the Cyrus M. Running Art Gallery, honoring the Cyrus M. Running painting “Cityscapes a gift to Concordia College. This gift was from the Lyman and Julia Eidsvold family. It is an oil painting that St. Olaf College commissioned Professor Cyrus M. Running to create. St. Olaf gave the painting to the Eidsvold family, in memory of Lyman’s and Julia’s daughter, Janet Eidsvold (when Janet was a sophomore, majoring in art, at St. Olaf, she was killed in a car accident).

Cyrus Running (b.1913 - d.1976)
Art Professor; Department Chair at Concordia College 1940-1972.
Born in Veblen, SD, Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department. Running had obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history and biology from St. Olaf College, studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Before arriving at Concordia, he taught high school music and history in Wisconsin and at the University of Omaha.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department and carrying a full teaching load, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running showed skillful devotion to any task put before him. He designed the Concordia Christmas Concert backgrounds for thirty years and his murals can be seen in various buildings on campus. In addition to being a highly talented artist, Running also possessed great musical ability and humor, which he combined in a parody titled “I Hate Music” that was performed for civic, college and church groups. In 1974, the campus art gallery was renamed the “Cyrus M. Running Art Gallery.”

From Wikipedia: Cyrus M. Running (1913-1976) was an American regionally distinguished painter. A student of Grant Wood, he is sometimes considered a regionalist. Much of his art focuses on themes common to Minnesota or Norway. He was a member of the faculty of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, for many years.

A gray washed roadway pulls the viewer deeper in to the central part of the image from the bottom left part of the picture frame or edge of the image. Gray, blue, and brown washes dominate as a base, with smaller areas of orange wash (in the lower left) and yellow wash (on the upper right corner). Over the washes vigorous pen and ink drawing describes bridges, buildings, power poles, wires, and antennas. The line work is gestural with focal points of heavy hatching and cross-hatching that add density. Arches are depicted both vertically and horizontally, unifying and softening the straight-edged geometry of the image. The piece is signed in the lower left corner of the image, “Cyrus Running 1962” in clearly printed black ink caps.</text>

Cyrus Running (1913-1976) was born in Veblen, South Dakota. Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department, carrying a full teaching load, and serving as the department chair, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running Art Gallery.” </text>

Cyrus Running (1913-1976) was born in Veblen, South Dakota. Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department, carrying a full teaching load, and serving as the department chair, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running Art Gallery.” </text>
