Jarle Rosseland was born in Bergen in 1952. His debut into the art world happened in 1970 at the Norwegian National Annual Autumn Exhibition when he was 18 years old. Since then he has become one of Norway's most prominent artists. He is most known for his style which consists of crisp lines, fluid movement, and interesting contours all of which are coupled with bizarre colors. He has stated that his inspiration and style are based in traditional Norwegian landscape and folk art. He has over 300 exhibitions all over the world, 32 of which are in national museums.</text>

Clay ranges in consistency from a liquid to a dry solid, and these property variations influence both my content and compositional decisions. Consequently, I attempt to reach the viewer through a variety of abstract topics and sculptural arrangements based upon how I can most successfully tap the potential of clay as a vehicle for visual communication. This artist statement is intentionally elusive because I want to give the viewer an entry point for reflecting upon my work without offering details that could potentially obstruct the creative thinking required of the viewer when actively involved in the process of contemplating visual art.

<text>This is a mosaic that shows different types of technologies and innovations of science. The mosaic is made up of 20 different squares that each show different details. Starting at the bottom left, there is a mortar and pestle with the medical caduceus alongside a red RX symbol. At the bottome right is a large satellite that extends outside of the borders of it's box. The background of this portion is made up of a bright red color. The satellite points towards the top left and has three light tan lines extending to the top. Above the satellite is a compass rose in yellow, orange and red colors on top of an abstracted globe that is made up of green and blue colors. Next to the compass rose is a small square with a wavelength symbol in light yellow and tan on a green background. Above the wavelength symbol is a stack of four books, two with red covors, one with a yellow and blue cover, and one with a light tan cover, that are being used as a pedestal for a white scale. To the left of the scale is a long stand of DNA that spans across two squares. The DNA strand is made up of yellow, orange, red and light tan colors. It gets smaller as it moves farther to the left. In two small squares right underneath the strand of DNA are the symbol for male and femal in light grey. Above the strand of DNA is a square filled with green and small lines and dots in white that represents the motherboard of a computer. Next to the motherboard is a desktop monitor and keyboard sitting at an angle in the middle of a 3x3 set of squares. The screen of the computer shows binary code and the computer itself is in a brown color. to the bottom left of the computer is ""www."" and to the bottom right of the computer is "".com"" The top right of the mosaic shows a set of 4 CDs. Each CD shows a different angle. The top right of the mosaic depicts a satellite in grey pointing down to the bottom right. It is connected to the satellite dish through the light tan lines mentioned before. The background of many of the squares is a mixture of light blues and greens. The outline of each square is a dark black with small points of red and blue.

David Hetland was born in 1947 in Fargo, North Dakota. He studied under Cyrus M. Running while he was a student at Concordia College before graduating in 1969. In 1965, he took over design and creation of the Concordia College Christmas Concert murals and completely took over the role of designer in 1975. Some of Hetland's works are internationally known such as the Jerusalem Cross that was commissioned by the ELCA and presented to Pope John Paul II. Another of his mosaics hands in the entrance of the ELCA's churchwide offices in Chicago. At Concordia, he designed the president's medallion in 1980 and is known for a mosaic mural in the library. David Hetland died on April 16th, 2006.</text>

Cyrus Running (b.1913 – d.1976)
Art Professor; Department Chair at Concordia College 1940-1972.
Born in Veblen, SD, Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department. Running had obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history and biology from St. Olaf College, studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Before arriving at Concordia, he taught high school music and history in Wisconsin and at the University of Omaha.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department and carrying a full teaching load, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running showed skillful devotion to any task put before him. He designed the Concordia Christmas Concert backgrounds for thirty years and his murals can be seen in various buildings on campus. In addition to being a highly talented artist, Running also possessed great musical ability and humor, which he combined in a parody titled “I Hate Music” that was performed for civic, college and church groups. In 1974, the campus art gallery was renamed the “Cyrus M. Running Art Gallery.”

From Wikipedia: Cyrus M. Running (1913-1976) was an American regionally distinguished painter. A student of Grant Wood, he is sometimes considered a regionalist. Much of his art focuses on themes common to Minnesota or Norway. He was a member of the faculty of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, for many years.
