<text>Notes: My work is primarily inspired by the versatility of clay as a material. Clay ranges in consistency from a liquid to a dry solid, and these property variations influence both my content and compositional decisions. Consequently, I attempt to reach the viewer through a variety of abstract topics and sculptural arrangements based upon how I can most successfully tap the potential of clay as a vehicle for visual communication. This artist statement is intentionally elusive because I want to give the viewer an entry point for reflecting upon my work without offering details that could potentially obstruct the creative thinking required of the viewer when actively involved in the process of contemplating visual art.

Charles Beck was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He completed military service during his time away from Moorhead and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Iowa and study art in the 1950s. After completing graduate school, he returned to the Red River Valley area and established himself as a prominent artist in the area. Much of his inspiration comes from the landscape of the area, specifically the woods, and farmland. In his 90s now, Charles Beck still works and creates prints out of his studio.</text>

Richard, 'Rick', Mikkelson grew up in the Red River Valley and attended Concordia College in 1965. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in art. He also earned an M.A. and an M.F.A in painting from the University of Iowa in 1967 and 1969. Much of his work his inspired by his life growing up in the Red River Valley and Breckenridge, or landscapes in Spain. Many of his works depict landscapes, figures or still lifes. While many of his works are representational, he also focuses heavily on abstraction and symbolism. He chaired the Art Department at the State University of New York - Plattsburgh for 10 years. Currently he works as a professor of drawing and painting at that school.

Orland J Rourke was born in 1930 and grew up in the Fargo/Moorhead area. Orland first taught at a one room schoolhouse near Langdon, ND right after he graduated high school at the age of eighteen. He joined the Air Force not long after and spent a number of years in service. He graduated from Concordia College in 1959 after his time in the military. In 1967 he began teaching at Concordia and would retire in 1995 with the title of Professor Emeritus. His great passions were ceramics, painting, weaving, drawing, collage, and photography among many other things. He often combined many types of art to create his most memorable pieces.</text>

Cyrus Running (1913-1976) was born in Veblen, South Dakota. Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department. Running had obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history and biology from St. Olaf College, studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Before arriving at Concordia, he taught high school music and history in Wisconsin and at the University of Omaha.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department, carrying a full teaching load, and serving as the department chair, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running showed skillful devotion to any task put before him. He designed the Concordia Christmas Concert backgrounds for thirty years and his murals can be seen in various buildings on campus. In addition to being a highly talented artist, Running also possessed great musical ability and humor, which he combined in a parody titled “I Hate Music” that was performed for civic, college and church groups. In 1974, the campus art gallery was renamed the “Cyrus M. Running Art Gallery.” </text>

In his 90s now, Charles Beck still works and creates prints out of his studio. </text>
