Richard, 'Rick', Mikkelson grew up in the Red River Valley and attended Concordia College in 1965. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in art. He also earned an M.A. and an M.F.A in painting from the University of Iowa in 1967 and 1969. Much of his work his inspired by his life growing up in the Red River Valley and Breckenridge, or landscapes in Spain. Many of his works depict landscapes, figures or still lifes. While many of his works are representational, he also focuses heavily on abstraction and symbolism. He chaired the Art Department at the State University of New York - Plattsburgh for 10 years. Currently he works as a professor of drawing and painting at that school.
