Merlin Rostad was born in Zumbrota, Minnesota in 1913. Much of his childhood was spent helping his parents in their jobs as general store managers and postmasters. As he grew, Merlin's interests turned to painting and he attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota where he participated in creating and constructing the sets for the theatrical performances put on by the theater. He married Gladys Evelyn Holm and moved to Chicago to continue his art education at the Chicago Art Institute. He worked in metal most of his life, founding Rostad Aluminum Corp which served anyone from construction companies to artists. Merlin Rostad died in 2013 at the age of 100.</text>

Raymond "Jake" Jacobson was born in Oak City, Utah. He grew up during the depression and learned many positive values such as persistence and hard work that would influence his artistic work later in his life. The natural world, and the beauty he associated with it, became large inspirations for him later in his life. During World War II, Jacobson worked as a bomber pilot. After his years of service, he married Jeanne Warner in 1945 and moved to Colorado where he studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder to receive his Master of Fine Arts degree. He taught at Carlton College from 1955 until retiring in 1986 with the title Professor Emeritus. He was continuously creating new works until his death in 2012 at the age of 91.</text>

This bust has Aasen as a man with broad shoulders, a prominent nose, a receding hairline, and a thin face covered by his beard. His forehead has wrinkles.
There are words on the stone underneath the bust. The Norwegian says ""Ivar Aasen/ Filolog-Dikter/ 1813 - 1896// Lat oss ink je forfederne/ glyma. under alt som me/ venda og sn?, for dei gav/ oss ein arv till aa goyma./ Han ner strre, en mange/ vil tru.// Resit av nordmnd/ ved sndmrelaget/ I Amerika/ 7 de Juni 1913"" (Please note that the / indicates where the words in go onto the next line. Also, the sculpture's pedestal has all its words in capital letters. As well ""DE"" is supposed to be superscript-ed - same goes for the English ""th"" because it is the seventh of the month). This translates into ""Ivar Aasen/ Philosopher - Poet/ 1813 - 1896// Let us never forget the forefathers/ In the changes we plan and conceive./ For they gave us in trust a great treasure,/ It is greater than we may believe.// Translation by/ Oscar R.
