<text>In this quintessential example of Braque's Cubist style, he pays tribute to famed composer J.S. Bach. This piece is remarkable for Braque's ability to depict a visual representation of music; we glimpse segments of musical instruments effortlessly and harmoniously arranged within a geometric order. Just below the center of the work the letters 'BACH JS' reveal to the viewer what the artist is illustrating, a visual interpretation of the beauty and splendor of classical music. Composed primarily in natural earth tones of brown, yellow, black, tan and grey, the linear dissection of the page appears like music notes on a scale at varying heights, lengths and tones in a unified composition. The painterly quality of the work adds a richness of depth and texture, giving the viewer a visual sense of the layered effect sound can create when it is a masterpiece. Pieces of musical instruments are revealed as one looks closely at the work, at the right a curved end of a stringed instrument makes us wonder if it could be a violin or a cello and from what musical work the artist was inspired by. The 'S' curves at the center of the image appear to be a continuation of the same instrument, with hints of the base and strings dispersed nearby. At the center, Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) uses deeper tones of brown and grey, and as the work expands out the edges of the page he uses lighter and brighter hues, giving a sense of lightness to the image.

<text>Notes: Olive Ardis (Arde) Thvedt Burt was born in Froid, Montana on September 9, 1925 to Reverend Ingvald and Matilda Thvedt the youngest by ten years of five children.
She died on August 17, 2013, at Parkview Home, Freeport after a two year struggle with Lewy Body Dementia.
Her remains have been cremated and will be interred in the columbarium in Grace Episcopal Church, Freeport.
Soon after Arde was born her family moved to Canada where her father provided pastoral services to several Lutheran (ELCA) congregations. When she was 13 and her father was dying of cancer, the family moved back to the United States.
Arde began her education at Nutana Collegiate in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan followed by attendance at five high schools in Minnesota as Arde and her mother moved around after her father's death. Following high school, she entered Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and graduated with a B.A degree in art. She subsequently received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
Arde taught at Stout State University of Wisconsin, Menomonie, Wisconsin for two years. She then taught art and design at the University of Wisconsin, Madison for ten years, concluding her career there as an Associate Professor. As an artist, Arde exhibited paintings in numerous venues over the years, including the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union; the Milwaukee Art Center; the Berg Art Center at Concordia College; and the young painters and printmakers of the U.S. traveling exhibitions. Along the way, Arde received a number of awards for her art work including the Randall M. Gay award for watercolors given by the Lutheran Brotherhood Insurance Company award. Arde's works are in a number of permanent collections including the Victoria Art Museum, Victoria, British Columbia, Canada; The American Family Insurance Company, Madison, Wisconsin; and the Madison Art Museum, Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1966, Arde and Woodruff A. (Woody) Burt were married in Fairbault, Minnesota. One son, Matthew M. Burt, was born of their marriage. Arde is survived by her husband, her son; daughter in law, Marit Moan; and grandson, Magnus M. Burt, of Vikhammar, Norway.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, Samuel, Ingvald and John, and her sister, Rachel Mini.
There will be a memorial service at Grace Episcopal Church in Freeport at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 27 from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are invited for the Freeport Art Center; the Amity Day Care Center and the Freeport Public School Fund.</text>

The part of the town we see has a water tower, three to four smokestacks, and some buildings. This woodcut is fairly simplistic, as seen through the use of color and shape. The colors have little variance, not changing hues. The buildings are very geometrically shaped and filled with solid color with very little, to no, texture. What little texture there is comes from the use of gray, which overlays some of the orange and yellow.

<text>Notes: Painting by John Carlander, dated 1965
This painting was purchased by my husband, D. Bruce Erickson, who graduated from Concordia College in 1965. He and John were friends at Concordia. Following his graduation, Bruce was a graduate student at Yale University, New Haven, CT, in the Department of Mathematics and eventually received his Ph.D. from that institution.
The original frame on the painting was made from old barnwood. While he was away at graduate school, Bruce's parents reframed the painting with a French-Provincial-style frame, much to Bruce's dismay.
Bruce and I met at Yale University in 1968 and were married in 1969. Both our children were born in New Haven, but we wished to relocate to the Midwest. Our opportunity came when Bruce was offered a one-year appointment teaching mathematics at Concordia for the 1973-74 academic year, to fill in for Dr. Gerald Heuer who would be on sabbatical. His appointment was extended for another year. Then he obtained a position at North Dakota State University to be part of a team to begin a computer science program there. Bruce worked at NDSU until his retirement for medical reasons in 2006. He was eventually diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy and died in 2009.
The current frame on the painting was purchased sometime in the 1970s. Bruce and I looked for a barnwood frame but could not find one in the Fargo-Moorhead area. I know that Bruce would have loved to see the painting back in a barnwood frame.
I am donating this painting to Concordia College and hope that they will make it part of their art collection. If the painting is not incorporated into the collection, I authorize the college to dispose of it by giving it to a Concordia faculty member, staff member or alumnus, or by selling or auctioning it to raise money for the college. </text>

Charles Beck was born in Fergus Falls, Minnesota and a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. He completed military service during his time away from Moorhead and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Iowa and study art in the 1950s. After completing graduate school, he returned to the Red River Valley area and established himself as a prominent artist in the area. Much of his inspiration comes from the landscape of the area, specifically the woods, and farmland. In his 90s now, Charles Beck still works and creates prints out of his studio.</text>
