Cyrus Running (1913-1976) was born in Veblen, South Dakota. Cyrus Running began teaching art at Concordia in 1940 where, for a number of years, he was the only faculty member in the department. Running had obtained a Bachelor of Arts in history and biology from St. Olaf College, studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts, and earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Before arriving at Concordia, he taught high school music and history in Wisconsin and at the University of Omaha.

In addition to developing Concordia’s Art Department, carrying a full teaching load, and serving as the department chair, Running also directed area choirs and painted houses and signs. Running showed skillful devotion to any task put before him. He designed the Concordia Christmas Concert backgrounds for thirty years and his murals can be seen in various buildings on campus. In addition to being a highly talented artist, Running also possessed great musical ability and humor, which he combined in a parody titled “I Hate Music” that was performed for civic, college and church groups. In 1974, the campus art gallery was renamed the “Cyrus M. Running Art Gallery.” </text>

From Karla Mickelson:
The Scent Catcher is one in a series of large woodland creatures. Duane always loved the setting of our home nestled in the woods on the shore of Lake 11. He enjoyed nature and would delight in seeing footprints in the soil or snow. Often, the prints were the only remaining 'remnants of the night." So one would wonder, what kind of creature was attached to those prints? As the creature wandered the woods, he tried to imagine what they looked like and what they would be doing. Lifting its head, the Scent Catcher has just caught a whiff of something on the edge of a breeze. There is both caution and curiosity as the creature tries to discern the scent.

Most of the wood was found on our property or on the old family wood lot near our home now owned by his brother, Dwight. There are a variety of wood pieces that make up the body and legs augmented by the steel armature. The head is one natural piece of found wood. </text>

He completed military service during his time away from Moorhead and took advantage of the G.I. Bill to attend the University of Iowa and study art in the 1950s. After completing graduate school, he returned to the Red River Valley area and established himself as a prominent artist in the area. Much of his inspiration comes from the landscape of the area, specifically the woods, and farmland. In his 90s now, Charles Beck still works and creates prints out of his studio.</text>

Richard, 'Rick', Mikkelson grew up in the Red River Valley and attended Concordia College in 1965. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in art. He also earned an M.A. and an M.F.A in painting from the University of Iowa in 1967 and 1969. Much of his work his inspired by his life growing up in the Red River Valley and Breckenridge, or landscapes in Spain. Many of his works depict landscapes, figures or still lifes. While many of his works are representational, he also focuses heavily on abstraction and symbolism. He chaired the Art Department at the State University of New York - Plattsburgh for 10 years. Currently he works as a professor of drawing and painting at that school.</text>

Next to the barn is a small out building that is in a light peach color and the roof is covered in white snow. In the middle of the piece is a third building that consists of black and peach colors with white snow covering the roof. This building especially shows the woodgrain of the printing block. The last building is a house on the right side of the piece. The body of the building is in a dark black with two small, light windows visible. The roof is a light tan in color with a large patch of white snow on top. There are four stands of trees visible. One, of very tall trees, on the left of the piece behind the barn. One with shorter trees behind the house. One lone tree on the far right of the piece and two white trees are in the far background on the right of the piece. The ground in the foreground is a mixture of light tan, white and black colors that show the texture of snow and dirt road. The sky in the background is a mixture of light tan and white with orange accents on the left and right side of the piece.
