This image is an abstract cityscape with central emphasis. A gray washed roadway pulls the viewer deeper in to the central part of the image from the bottom left part of the picture frame or edge of the image. Gray, blue, and brown washes dominate as a base, with smaller areas of orange wash (in the lower left) and yellow wash (on the upper right corner). Over the washes vigorous pen and ink drawing describes bridges, buildings, power poles, wires, and antennas. The line work is gestural with focal points of heavy hatching and cross-hatching that add density. Arches are depicted both vertically and horizontally, unifying and softening the straight-edged geometry of the image. The piece is signed in the lower left corner of the image, “Cyrus Running 1962” in clearly printed black ink caps.
