The art object is a bronze sculpture bust of Ivar Aasen.

Description

This bronze sculpture is a bust of Ivar Aasen, the Norwegian philologist, lexicographer, playwright and poet, who lived from August 5, 1813 - September 23, 1896. This bust has Aasen as a man with broad shoulders, a prominent nose, a receding hairline, and a thin face covered by his beard. His forehead has wrinkles.
There are words on the stone underneath the bust. The Norwegian says ""Ivar Aasen/ Filolog-Dikter/ 1813 - 1896// Lat oss ink je forfederne/ glyma. under alt som me/ venda og sn?, for dei gav/ oss ein arv till aa goyma./ Han ner strre, en mange/ vil tru.// Resit av nordmnd/ ved sndmrelaget/ I Amerika/ 7 de Juni 1913"" (Please note that the / indicates where the words in go onto the next line. Also, the sculpture's pedestal has all its words in capital letters. As well ""DE"" is supposed to be superscript-ed - same goes for the English ""th"" because it is the seventh of the month). This translates into ""Ivar Aasen/ Philosopher - Poet/ 1813 - 1896// Let us never forget the forefathers/ In the changes we plan and conceive./ For they gave us in trust a great treasure,/ It is greater than we may believe.// Translation by/ Oscar R. Overby// Raised by Norwegians/ Of the Sandmore Club/ In America/ June 7th 1913""
