Duane Keith Mickelson was born on December 26, 1952 in Hawley, Minnesota.[1] He lived his whole life around Hawley, Minnesota and graduated from Hawley High School in 1970.[2] He later attended Concordia College and graduated in 1974.[3] He met his wife, Karla, during his time at Concordia and the two of them married on June 25, 1988 at St. James Lutheran Church in Crystal, Minnesota.[4]

Before taking a position as professor at Concordia, he earned a Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Dakota in 1982.[5]

On November 24, 2015, he passed away after living with brain cancer for 23 years.[6][7]
